"How to Differentiate Beryllium Copper from Brass: A Non-Damaging Approach"

Many customers have asked me how to distinguish between beryllium copper and brass materials without damaging the copper plate?

Many customers have asked me how to distinguish between beryllium copper and brass materials without damaging the copper plate?
Beryllium copper and brass cannot be distinguished from their appearance colors. The color is usually dark yellow or light yellow, which is a sparkling color. This makes one confused and worried about whether the purchased beryllium copper is fake.
Although we cannot distinguish by color, due to the relatively lower density of beryllium copper (8.35) compared to brass (8.5-8.8), we can distinguish by weight at the same size, with beryllium copper being slightly lighter and brass being slightly heavier.
How can we distinguish between different sizes? It should be noted that the hardness of beryllium copper after aging quenching is HRC36-44 (around HV410), which can reach the level of medium strength steel. The hardness of brass is HB100-220 (HV100-230), indicating that beryllium copper has a much higher hardness than brass. By measuring the hardness with a hardness tester, the authenticity can be determined.
In order to better distinguish between beryllium copper and brass, we can use a spectrometer to analyze their composition content. As is well known, the composition of different materials varies greatly. Beryllium copper generally contains 1.8-2.0% beryllium, 0.2-0.5% cobalt and nickel, with the remainder being copper, while brass contains elements such as iron, zinc, lead, tin, and copper, with varying compositions. By testing and analyzing their components with a spectrometer, they can be distinguished and differentiated.
In summary, beryllium copper and brass can be effectively distinguished through methods such as density, hardness, and composition analysis.
