Beryllium copper often produces an oxide film on its surface during heat treatment. Before further electroplating and welding processes, the beryllium copper oxide film must be removed. The commonly used beryllium copper cleaning methods are as follows:

Disperse beryllium copper in 20% dilute sulfuric acid and heat it to 50-90 degrees Celsius. The oxide film will be removed within a few minutes. If time permits, beryllium copper can also be immersed in the solution at room temperature for one night. Because the oxide film caused by grease contamination cannot be removed by acid washing, degreasing treatment should be carried out before hardening.

Degreasing: Any grease on the surface of beryllium copper alloy can cause surface stains or affect the effectiveness of subsequent heat treatment, electroplating and welding. Once stamping oil is used in stamping, it must be degreased after stamping. If the chlorine or sulfur content in the stamping oil is high, the degreasing method must be carefully estimated or avoided.

Rust prevention: Benzotriazole is commonly used to prevent discoloration of beryllium copper alloy caused by air. It forms a divalent copper benzotriazole on the surface of beryllium copper alloy, which is insoluble in water and other solvents. It does not affect the pre-treatment process of electroplating because it sublimates at 100 degrees Celsius or high temperature, so it has no effect on age hardening treatment.
